Level 1 - Water Introduction

This class is an introduction to group swim lessons for swimmers ages 4-5 who may be new to swim lessons (we encourage our 3 yr old swimmers to take our Water Independence Class for 2-3 yr olds).  The goal is to gain confidence and get adjusted to being with an instructor and other swimmers.  This class is best for swimmers who are new to flotation devices (not being able to touch the bottom) or swimmers that are anxious.  Skills that will be addressed in this class will be floating and gliding on both the stomach and the back, blowing bubbles and working on submerging the face, jumping with assistance, and entering and exiting the water independently.

Level 2 - Water Exploration

Swimmers in this class should have mastered the skills in Level 1 including blowing bubbles, floating on both stomach and back with assistance, jumping with assistance, and entering and exiting the water independently.  The main focus of this class is to progress to submerging their face in the water, jumping independently, completing a front and back float with very limited assistance.  In addition to work building swimming strength and comfort, swimmers will explore how their body moves in the water and we will distinguish between “running” (survival swimming) and kicking (forward positioning).  By the end of the class, swimmers should be able to submerge their face comfortably and blow bubbles, work on rolling and changing direction, and show an understanding of how to adjust their arm and leg motion to move in the water.  Swimmers will start to do skills without their floatation aids so they can explore how their body works with the water.

Level 3 - Water Discovery

Once swimmers master the skills in Level 2, the instructors will begin working on building strength, coordination, and movement on both the front and the back.  As swimmers progress through the class, instructors will start doing more skills without the assistance of floatation devices.  Flotation aids may continue to be used to ensure proper technique and endurance.  Swimmers at this level should be strong and comfortable enough to swim short distances with out any assistance but will continue to use floatation devices so that swimmers can concentrate on learning more advanced skills.  By the completion of this level, swimmers should be able to float on their back unassisted, glide on their front while blowing bubbles, swim on their stomach and kick on their back increasingly longer distances without floatation (10-15yds), retrieve items under water, show the ability to properly inhale and exhale while swimming, and will start doing both sitting and kneeling dives.

Level 4 - Fundamental Water Skills

Swimmers in this class will advance their skills learned in our Level 3 programming.  Swimmers will start to learn rotary breathing, front crawl with an over-the-water arm pull, learn backstroke and be introduced to elementary backstroke, become independent of floatation aids (may still be used while learning rhythmic breathing so they can concentrate on doing the skill properly not just staying up), treading water, and increasing confidence and skill with both sitting and kneeling dives.  Swimmers should not register for this class unless they have complete comfort with proper breathing skills (blowing bubbles from nose and mouth, submerging both head first and feet first, continuously blowing bubbles for 3-6 sec while performing swimming motions with both arms and legs) since learning rotary breathing too soon can lead to bad habits and poor body positioning.
